On the 10/11th September next year there will be an event taking place in Cosby, South Leicestershire. The location is easily reached from either Junction 20/21 of the M1 and is also 600 yards from the old Fosse Way. The event will be a dedicated WW2 living history event. The aim of the event is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of both VE and VJ Day's and to raise monies for two charities:
The Leicestershire Regt. Museum Fund
The RAF Benevolent Fund
The event is taking place on open farmland and as such We have a blank canvas as to what types of displays groups/ individuals would like to do.
The landowner has just grass seeded two fields for the placing of camps and also has woodland areas and even a lake for our use. There is also a 7 acre field for the use of vehicle displays and also 'Set piece scenarios', we cannot use the word 'battle' for insurance purposes !. The landowner is more than happy to have groups come along and 'dig' and drive their hardware in this area.
There will be a dance held in a marquee on the Saturday evening with two top quality bands. We are selling 500 tickets to the public, re-enactors and vehicle owners are also welcome to the dance and if there is enough interest we will run the Dance on the Friday evening aswell.
I have so far booked a P51 Mustang to display on one of the days and I'm looking to book another warbird in the very near future. I am awaiting a reply from the BBMF and have also had a number of other offers from warbird owners.
We are even looking at rolling out an airstrip to land a couple of light spotter aircraft.
I also have a commitment from Steve Vickers to supply any weaponry/blank ammunition needed.
Traders are and have been invited and we are NOT charging them to attend, all we are asking is that they make a donation to the charities over the weekend.
I have a number of groups who have already committed to the event and many who have expressed an interest. This event is being run by re-enactors for re-enactors and as such I am open to ALL suggestions as to what people would like to see at an event. We are providing good quality toilet and shower facilities (so often overlooked at events !) and secure parking/camping for re-enactors/vehicle owners.
The landowner is running the event as a non profit making exercise for himself !! All he needs to do is cover his costs, which should be achieved via the dance tickets. Any profit generated will go to the charities !!
Entries are therefore invited from groups to attend this event. The plan is to set up separate areas for each nationality represented. As stated we have over 60 acres to play with !! So I hope that we can put on an impressive display. I already have one group who want to try and set up a camp that was commonplace in Leicestershire when the 82nd Airborne
were here.
We will be inviting veterans to attend and they will obviously not be charged entry to the event. We will also be providing a tea/rest area for them, this invite is to veterans from all nationalities.
This event WILL be big and if it goes well then the landowner will run it again if the demand is there.
