Tiny, this is the No.1 issue that Chris, Bob and myself will be dealing with at Ashby on the Friday O-Group.
Obviously we will get all involved, but for the benefit of the MOPs, it may be a bit of fun to get the NCO's and Mr Smythe to do some chit-chat, patrol orders, stag duties, fatigues etc.

Sounds brilliant all this, really bringing the realism to the public.

This is the real crux of the matter. as a group we cant realisticaly show the public the true scale of the 10% of a Tommys day that was fighting, but we can show them the 90% of his day that was life in the field. ie the O groups the section banter, daily make and mends ect. To quote Guv the whole "hurry up and wait" of the tommys daily grind.

Perhaps an inter section tea-brewing competition = from water and powder to the finished article. Marks out of 10 for 'Artistic Impression' and 'Technical Merit' ?
Sounds like an ideal scenario for the Lance Jacks to get their grubby little paws on.
(Obviously the Senior NCO's get to keep the tea when the competition is over) Some blokes will go to any length to get a free cuppa!

This i like..... Each of us can fill our time 'looking the part', matters if your a talker or not but the public expect to see images of their Grandfathers peers.... why else are they at these shows ? Standing around looking tough we aint.... we are and always will reflect enlisted men. mend socks / blanco web / brew tea / read the paper / dubb boots / anything but you get the idea.
I'm looking to purchase a journal syle booklet for my personal kit, I can sketch in a fashion & add notes on things we see & do in a period style (if you've read with the Jocks you'll know where i'm coming from). entertaining to the public ? time will tell...but its worth a try. We've plenty of scope to do things too, eat your rations at the table, thats what the Savoy is for, we also own a stitched leather football too, at Stowe this year as a side entertainment we'll be doing a section Vs section tug o war, its a great way of giving the public a lasting visual memory. Mostly the public want to be entertained by us, thats our job in my opinion....its down to us as members to make sure they get a jolly good day out.

spot on chris
ive been to a lot of reenactments before i joined and entertainment is important, the best show i went to was in nassington in peterborough. A load of knights in a tourne ( mild beat the crap out of each other fight )
lots of banter between the knights and squires and eveyone hated the "shining armour" knight showing off.
10 men and the most fun i have ever seen at a show absolutely hilarious.
A lot of ww2 re-enactors are a little dry just doing talks or copying comedy moments from films, lets be original and think up scenarios, tug of war sounds great and football would be a laugh we can even get little kids as our mascots to egg us on
no4s as goal posts.....

Just want to guage the opinion of you lads about something. Now that i have a stripe how do you feel if i ACT the part of an NCO when the public are around? THE LAST THING I WANT IS FOR ANYONE TO GET PI55ED OFF OR ANNOYED WITH THIS APPROACH. I definately want Guv, Whizz, Sarge and Rupert to give me orders and tell me what to do. As Whizz always says "it means nothing", it's just for the public to enjoy. It will be purely acting!! In no way do i feel otherwise. You can also slag me off for the benefit of the public as well. Can see it now.... i give a couple of you a job to do, when i've gone you tell each other what you think of me!! the public would love it - well amusing. What do you think fellas??

Oll, It's two-way traffic mate, we do events to entertain/educate people, but also for our own enjoyment.
One part of a so called 'rank structure' is to add to the historical authenticity - it's also a bit of fun too mate.
Well I say go for it - we have no hidden motives or 'power-hungry' nutters. It's why we can keep our own message forum like this open to anybody to read. So I think anything you (or anybody else) can add to the overall 'feel' is most welcome. Besides, as a history teacher, you can teach us a thing or two I bet!!!
I must admit, whenever I am 'in character' or just in the field, my first thought before making any decision is - 'what would a Tiger Veteran have done'.
We are in this society to make a small difference to the perspective of todays Hollywood-revisionist clique methinks.
Here endeth the lesson, I'm off for a cuppa.

couldnt agree more. rank is for authenticity and banter it adds a little spice for the mops and highlights the section/platoon structure to anyone interested, and its all the more important to portray this as the group swells. Ill gladly tell you what to do Oll, just as soon as the NCO'S let me know exactly what that is, and what I should be doing in the meantime......now wheres my 9 iron? ?

I tab when I'm wearing my Tommy kit, I just think it adds to the overall effect. I really need to find a cigarette case, and get either get some roll ups or old style tabs to put in it.
