Dear All,
It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that my fathers cousin : Edwin Richard Allsopp has died after a long illness. 'Eddie' as he was always known, was a former 'Tiger' landing with the Canadians at St. Come on D+ 1, he took part in the fighting in Normandy and was involved with taking of Carpiquet airfiled. Eddie met his wife, Marcel, when he landed in Normandy and married her in 1946. He went to fight throughout Northern Europe, eventually becoming a Military Policeman and was involved in the liberation of Belsen Bergen cocentration camp. eddie and Marcel came back to Leicester and lived a very happy life in Wigston Magna.
Eddie was like a brother to my Dad and he along with my Dad and their friend from Sth. Wigston, Joe Hall all went to join up with the Leicesters, Only Eddie got in, Dad ended up in the 2nd R. Berks. and Joe the 1st R. Berks.
Joe was killed in action in March 1945 in Burma and is remembered on the the South Wigston war memorial. Now only my Father is left from the 'terrible trio' !
Eddie will be buried on Monday 21st March at Wigston Magna cemetary afer a service at All Saints Church, Moat St. Wigston at 14.30. He requested that he was buried with his blazer on still bearing the 'tigers' crest and his beret and medals will be on his coffin.
Eddie always had a smile and even though he suffered in recent years with various illnesses he would always crack a joke. Thankfully he was well enough to go back to Normandy for one last time last year.
I know he and my dad got upto all sorts of 'scrapes' during thier younger years and when they joined up and he would often tell me a story or two !!
The world, today, is a sad place without Eddie Allsopp.
God Bless you Eddie.
