Here are a couple of the top ov me head that stayed with the regiments. If any more are known please reply, id be interessted:
"steady the Buffs"- hence the royal east kent regiment became known as the Buffs. The motto "Steady The Buffs" is attributed to have been given to the regiment by The Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo. The "Buffs" were under extream gunfire from the advancing French, and looked to be wavering. The Duke rode up and down their ranks shouting, "STEADY THE BUFFS". The regiment rallied and held the line, and as we know the Duke won the battle. The Buffs had this motto placed on their cap badge.
"Diehard middlesex diehard"- hence the middlesex regiment became known as the diehards. At this battle the 57th were out numbered four to one.
"Black knots"- Nickname given to the South Staffordshires due to the knot on there tunics at the time. There used to be two regiments, south staffs and north staffs. Unfortunately they merged into one and became the Royal Staffordshires. There mascot is the Staff bull terrier.
