25.000 to 30.000 were produced between 1941 and 1946. After Australian troops encountered the MP40 in the Middle east, Australian arms industry Married the telescopic main spring and bolt from the MP40 to the sten, added a pistol grip below the magazine and a folding butt. feed from a 20rd mag with a cyclic rate of 500rpm was almost a kilo heavier than a sten.

True mate, it was almost a different weapon, the mk 1/1 had the barrel sleeve replaced with a foregrip to enable a bayonet to be fitted - an awesome bit of kit.
The Mp40 style butt-piece had the cleaning rods housed in the hollow sections - check out Ian Skennertons awesome S.A.I.S. series of books - #3 is just on the Austen and Owen - an awesome must-have book for any WW2 ANZAC groupie mate.
