Firstly, after reading somewhere that ammo boots should have a three ply sole, ie the bit that you walk on is made up of three pieces of leather. How accurate is this? My knackered ammo boots have three, but my newish ones only have two.
Secondly, I heard recently that BD's were taylored to the individual. Personally I find this a bit hard to believe as at the time I imagaine soldiers were given the closest set of BD's to their particular size.
Just wondering about this as I'm getting a new set of BD's, as I'm not too impressed with my S of F stuff. But I'm not sure weather to get taylor made stuff from War Horse or off the peg from Pegasus militaria.

Tailored = yes.... in peace time. You're correct otherwise. when the 49 patt was issued the style was a mile away from the article you'd end up with... conjour up this image. Lines of Tommies each being handed a very loose fitting blouse, a regimental tailor & his assistants sizing you up and chalking out the cuts & nips as your wearing it. Blouse gets handed in to a team of seamstress and 30 mins later your done. everyone a winner.
I found a bunch of unissued 49 patts still with the chalk marks on em.

Hope this helps, as his Sale pitch is Buy Once Buy the Best! its very true other stuff falls apart on ya, Steves dont!

Tailored = yes.... in peace time. I guess theoreticly that would mean that no wartime 40 pttn was tailored to the individual as opposed to the '37 BD, I have often thought about getting my 40 pttn tailored because the trousers are quite baggy.. but if thats the case I shall leave them as they are, my grandfather told me his uniform was never tailored to fit.... I would have thought it would have been possible to take it to be altered by a tailor, if you could spare the cash..... I suppose it's a matter of would the carachter you portray have worn a tailored uniform.

www.pegasusmilitaria.comBest to e-mail or phone as websites not updated very often, hes also doing a limited run of 37ptn I orded one at Melvern, they look Very good! As for 40 ptns being tailored I have about 3 in my collection that have been, and a few they havent, and I know that at least 2 of them didnt see post war service, You must also remeber that most troops didnt Get BD until after France 1940 even most reg units went into France is 22ptn kit! I think that most had a second BD Jacket for walking out, Trouses just seem to be modified to height, As for your trouses they are ment to be bloody baggy! People called most repro BD makers when they first came on the market about 5 years ago that they all made them to baggy, what you must remember is that 49Ptn is a less baggy more styled version, and until the repros came along people didnt have Baggy Pants! Again, in my collection I have originals that are Very Baggy 37/40Ptn Again Hope this helps

Nice one.... After the landings the Brits complained they felt like the poor relations to the Yanks in quality of uniform. The collar was introduced to the shirt as a result of this i believe.
As for tailoring ... you'll be needing clothing coupons too, something servicemen didn't get.
Tight fitting BD's..... Gary what sizes do you own of origonal blouses ?, all mine would struggle to fit a midget ! The only one thats tailored & a reasonable size, i suspect aint kosha.

Tiny mate, i have just got a brand new BD from replicaters.com. It's a 40ptn and is excellent quality, and at £120 for the lot including postage it really is spot on.
